Dichlorodifluoromethane (E940): What It Is and Is It Safe?
Dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12) is a chlorofluorocarbon formerly used as a propellant and freezant for spray-chilling foods. As an ozone-depleting substance it has been phased out under the Montreal Protocol and is no longer used as a food additive. It is chemically stable and of low acute ingestion toxicity, but its use ceased for environmental reasons.
