Ferrous carbonate is the iron(II) salt of carbonic acid and occurs naturally as the mineral siderite. Food uses are minor, acting as a source of dietary iron and occasionally as a colour; the iron dissolves poorly and is less bioavailable than soluble iron salts. It presents no specific toxicological concern at the trace levels used in food.
