Cryptoxanthin is a natural orange-yellow carotenoid abundant in oranges, tangerines, papaya and egg yolk, and beta-cryptoxanthin is a provitamin A. It is non-toxic at dietary levels. It is not authorised as a standalone food colour in the EU/UK, where lutein E161b is the only permitted xanthophyll colour.
