Erythorbin Acid (E317): What It Is and Is It Safe?

Erythorbin acid is an erythorbate-type antioxidant, a stereoisomer relative of ascorbic acid used to prevent oxidation and stabilise colour. The number E317 is not authorised as a food additive in the EU or GB, where the same function is served by the permitted erythorbic acid E315 and sodium erythorbate E316. It has no vitamin C activity.
